Wine Spectator | Rating: 94

Dark and dense, but emerges with vivid color and bright flavors of raspberry, black cherry and a hint of peach, beautifully tinged with cocoa, licorice and mineral notes as the finish sails on impressively.

($55) Deep, bright ruby. Seductive aromas of dark berries, violet, incense and dusty cocoa powder. Concentrated and tactile, with superb depth and noteworthy definition and cut to the flavors of cherry compote, dark berry liqueur and candied violet. Wonderfully broad on the long, expansive finish. The tannins are smooth and harmonious, fading quickly into the fruit. Great fruit and florality here.

Almost black in color. Nose is heavenly - well balanced. Taste: A powerful shiraz. Spice hits first followed by black fruit flavors. What Power! What a finish!

About This Producer

The "two hands" are Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz, who formed the company in 1999 with the clear objective of making the best possible Shiraz-based wines from prized regions within Australia. In 2000 they started with just 17 tons of fruit from the McLaren Vale and Padthaway wine regions. From the beginning the wines were very well received at home and abroad, with a healthy stream of reviews, culminating in 2004 with Robert Parker pronouncing Two Hands as "the finest negociant operation south of the equator."

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
