The 2008 Monte Bello is striking. It is a decidedly muscular Monte Bello endowed with layers of dark fruit. Tobacco, mint, asphalt and crushed rocks develop in the glass, adding tons of complexity and finesse. A long, saline finish rounds things out beautifully. In 2008 the cold growing season stretched into October and the wine definitely has the feel of a cool vintage. The spring frost and the second year of drought conditions lowered yields significantly. Yields were just 1.25 tons per acre on average, but some of the older vineyards came in at less than 1 ton per acre. The balance of fruit, tannin and structure is simply extraordinary, but the wine needs time, most likely lots of it. In 2008 the blend is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038.

(72% cabernet sauvignon and 28% merlot; 13.3% alcohol): Glass-staining ruby. Powerful, pungent aromas of cherry-vanilla, cassis, candied licorice and graphite, along with a suave floral oil quality that gains strength with air. Deeply pitched dark berry flavors show a liqueur-like intensity, as well as notes of smoky Indian spices, violet and vanilla. Ripe but quite vibrant, wih superb finishing clarity and persistence. This extremely young wine makes the case that high alcohol isn't a prerequisite for intensity or power in California cabernet.

Very tight, dense, tense and firm, with aromas of road tar, dried currant and dried tobacco leaf offering plenty of enticement, picking up gamy earth and black licorice notes. Retains its trim, narrow band of flavors and focus. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Very correct and with lots of lift. Dry finish and wonderfully complex though embryonic.

The 2008 Ridge Monte Bello did not disappoint. It was served with a roasted, then grill-finished, whole beef tenderloin. The color was dark - almost inky purple. The nose had fragrances of blackberry and cherry, sweet cigar and an earthy wetness. The palate was delicious - the fruit was mature, yet juicy; the body was soft, round and luscious. The tannins were firm and balanced. A nice complement to the beef. An enjoyable experience shared with close family.

About This Producer

Ridge Vineyards, known for its stellar reds, began when San Francisco doctor Osea Perrone bought 180 acres of land near the top of Monte Bello Ridge in California's Santa Cruz Mountains. The cellar, and present-day production site, was built into the mountainside on three levels. After success with several Cabernet Sauvignon vintages in the 1940s, the Perrone family decided to buy the terraces back and began producing high quality Zinfandels and Cabernet. By the '60s, Ridge was a 45-acre vineyard and produced its first Geyserville Zinfandel. Today, Ridge also has vineyards in Sonoma and Paso Robles. While Cabernet and Zinfandel make up most of Ridge's production, small amounts of Carignane, Syrah, Grenache, and Petite Syrah are also grown.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
