A terrific white Burgundy, already showing more about place than grape, with the creamy texture underscored by a mineral drive. Moreover, there's an energy propelling the lime, butter, pastry, peach and spice notes to a lingering conclusion, ending with a fine, creamy finish and finesse.

($502) Bright pale yellow. Initially reticent nose opens slowly to reveal exotic orange oil, honey, flowers and rock. Then wonderfully sweet and creamy in the mouth, with tangy tangerine and orange flavors complicated by crushed stone, toast and a leesy nuance. Penetrating stony acidity keeps this wine on message, but the very long finish also boasts superb lingering sweetness and breadth to go with the firm minerality.

About This Producer

Eighty-six hectares of Grand and Premier Cru vineyards. One hundred thirty total hectares in the Cote d'Or. Eighty crus produced each vintage. Two hundred seventy-five years of history. Bouchard Pere et Fils is truly an institution in Beaune. The Maison was founded by father and son Michel and Joseph Bouchard in 1731, and the family wine merchant business has grown steadily ever since, taking any opportunity to add to its vineyard holdings along the way. Not to be completely overshadowed by its wines, Bouchard conducts business in the very center of Beaune in the old Chateau de Beaune, whose storied past rivals that of the Maison. In 1995, the Champagne family of Joseph Henriot took control of Bouchard, resulting in improvements in quality, not to mention the addition of more top level vineyard sites. Reds of particular interest include the flagship Beaune Greve Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus and the Chambertin-Clos de Beze. As for whites, the Meursault Genevrieres, Meursault Perrieres, Chevalier-Montrachet and Montrachet are all great interpreters of their particular sites, exhibiting the many nuances of grand and premier cru Chardonnay.

Wine Varietal: Chardonnay

Arguably the best dry white wine grape out there, Chardonnay is grown all over the globe. In addition to being the backbone of fine white Burgundies, Chardonnay is also one of the three major grape varieties used in producing Champagne. Susceptible to a myriad of complications, Chardonnay berries are relatively small, thin-skinned, fragile, and oxidize easily. Chardonnay grapes can be sensitive to winemaking techniques and more difficult to handle from harvest to bottling than many other varieties. Some producers will use malolactic fermentation (where harsher malic acid is turned into softer lactic acid and carbon dioxide) to reduce crispness and acidity and add a creamy, buttery texture to wines. The "oaky" character of some Chardonnays comes from fermenting or aging which takes place in oak barrels. Once barrel-aged, Chardonnay may take on notes of vanilla or toast. While Chardonnay is produced worldwide, the best can be found in France, the United States, Argentina, Chile, Australia, Italy, New Zealand, and South Africa. Typical descriptors for Chardonnay include mineral, green apple, citrus, tropical fruits, vanilla, butter and smokiness.
