($34) Deep red. Sexy aromas of strawberry, raspberry, minerals and rose, along with a high-pitched minty nuance. Tight and youthfully structured, but at the same time displaying pliant red berry character and a hint of smoky minerality. Finishes with subtle aromatic persistence and lingering spiciness. This 900-acre property near Hollister, owned by Williams-Selyem, includes 750 planted acres, so expect plenty of this wine to be available in future vintages.

About This Producer


The emergence of Williams Selyem as one of California's Pinot Noir leaders is an improbable success story. Founders Burt Williams and Ed Selyem started making wine under the Hacienda del Rio Winery label in a garage in Fulton. Their first wine was a 1981 Zinfandel, but very soon after they began their quest for great Pinot Noir. By the late 1980s, Williams had retired as a typesetter and Selyem had left his job as a wine retailer, and they devoted themselves full-time to winemaking. In 1997, John Dyson bought the winery with plans of planting a 20-acre Russian River vineyard and gradually expanded production. Williams continued to make wine into 2000, after which time Bob Cabral, formerly of Alderbrook and Hartford Court, took over as Executive winemaker.

Quality across the board is exceptionally high, with especially notable Pinot Noirs. There are no secrets to Williams Selyem's success: they seek low yield, fully ripened grapes from superb vineyard sources.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir


Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
