Another big, concentrated effort is the dense ruby/plum/purple-hued 2008 Zinfandel Zampatti Vineyard. From vines planted in 1905, this cuvee boasts loads of kirsch, black currant, licorice, and smoky, meaty notes as well as sensational fruit purity and texture. This full-bodied, dense wine is already impressive, and should continue to drink well for 7-8 years, possibly longer.

($35) Good medium red. Crushed berries, spices, orange zest and a floral nuance on the nose. Juicy and light on its feet, with good cut and spice character giving energy to the mid-palate. This shows an almost pinot-like texture and is very easy to drink. Just a tad lean on the firmly tannic finish but I like this wine's verve.

About This Producer

Making "big reds" has been Larry Turley's passion since giving up his co-ownership of Frog's Leap Winery in 1993. Turley Wine Cellars is run by Larry and his wife Suzanne. Larry's sister, winemaker Helen Turley, made the wines here until 1995. Now the honor goes to Ehren Jordan, who also makes wines for Neyers. With a focus on producing old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, Turley sources fruit from vineyards some of which date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Both the Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs have a dark, saturated, inky color, with intense fruit flavors that make unforgettable statements about the power and complexity these varieties may attain.

Wine Varietal: Zinfandel

Zinfandel is a black grape variety of Croatian descent. With no ties to France, Zinfandel has actually been linked to the Primitivo grape of Italy, but California is where the majority of Zinfandel is grown. This variety possesses extremely versatile characteristics from light and fruity, to jammy and ripe with high alcohol. Growing Zinfandel can be difficult due to its packed clusters and short stems, which make the vines prone to uneven ripening and mildew. Preferring a warm climate, Zinfandel is also grown in other western states in the United States as well as in Australia and South Africa. Typical descriptors for Zinfandel include red berry fruits, raspberry, blackberry, anise and pepper.
