Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 98

2008 The Line: This wine was just released in April of this year, and is a blend of 87.5% Grenache, 11% Syrah, and 1.5% Viognier, with 21% whole clusters used in the Grenache component. Seventy-eight percent of it came from the 11 Confessions Vineyard and the balance from Bien Nacido and the White Hawk. It is no measly wine at 15.5% alcohol, but it displays extraordinary berry fruit and kirsch notes intermixed with lavender and other floral components. Intense, full-bodied, voluptuously textured, and stunningly pure, with no real noticeable oak (21% new French oak was used, most of it the larger demi-muids), this beauty has put on weight and is showing additional complexity since I first tasted it. Anticipated maturity: now-2023.

Smooth, rich, complex and layered, offering juicy, racy red currant, raspberry and boysenberry notes, with shades of pepper and spice. Full-bodied, deep and focused, ending with a long, pure, elegant, engaging finish that keeps the fruit front and center.

($145; includes 11% syrah and 1.5% viognier) Opaque ruby. An intensely perfumed bouquet displays aromas of black raspberry, Asian spices, rose oil and lavender, with a bright suggestion of white pepper. Juicy and penetrating red and dark fruit flavors reach every corner of the palate and show very impressive depth and clarity. Rich but energetic on the finish, which repeats the sweet berry and floral notes. Wild stuff and surprisingly approachable already.

About This Producer

Manfred Krankl, an Austrian immigrant and Los Angeles restaurateur turned winemaker, is a reclusive and maniacally hard-working proprietor. His back-alley Ventura winery, dubbed the "garage d'or," has been described as "a junkyard (or the first or second level of hell)" and compared to a set from the movie "Mad Max" by Robert Parker. A true believer in radical viticulture, Krankl has worked with excessively low yields and maintains his winery and vineyards with meticulous attention to detail.

Since the debut "Queen of Spades" in 1994, original artwork and increasingly creative wordplay has adorned the label of each SQN wine. The wine itself has become a benchmark for Rhone varieties not just in California, but in the world. With 100-point scores in double digits, Robert Parker raves, "...the Grenache is the finest in the New World, the Syrah begs to be compared with the greatest of France, California, and Australia, and the white wine blends assembled by Manfred Krankl are as sumptuous and complex as the world's finest Chardonnays..." For all collectors, and particularly those that love Rhone-styled wines, SQN truly is something indispensable.

Wine Varietal: Grenache

One of the most widely planted varieties in the world, Grenache is most well known as the base variety in wines from the Southern Rhone, such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Cotes-du-Rhone, and Gigondas. Grenache thrives in hot, arid climates all over the world particularly in the Mediterranean and Australia. Its origin is believed to be the Roussillon region of southern France (formerly Spain - where it is grown today and is known as Garnacha). Grenache is used in blends to round out Rhone-style reds to soften harsher varieties such as Syrah and Carignan. It is also used for rose wines. Typical descriptors for Grenache include raspberries, strawberries. black currants, black cherries, black olives, coffee, gingerbread, honey, leather, black pepper, tar, and herbes de Provence.
