Professional Reviews For This Wine

The 2008 Estate Cuvee State Lane Vineyard (68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) is spectacular. In fact, I rated it the same as I did the 2007. A dense ruby/purple hue is followed by a gorgeous bouquet of espresso roast, chocolate, blackberries and black fruits. Full-bodied with extraordinary elegance as well as tremendous texture, intensity and length, this singular wine should drink well for two decades. For those who complain that California wines are too alcoholic, every one of the Kapcsandy wines is under 14.6% alcohol.

purely domestic wine report | Rating: 96

I know it may sound strange to consider a $150 bottle a "bargain" but seeing it is half the price of the grand vin, that is just what happens with the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cuvee, a dark, rich nose of cherry, violet, hints of caramel and bottomless black fruit extract. The palate is deep, intense and polished, with copious black fruit, lavender and red currant.

Graves-like in its rusticity and minerally profile, this is firm, dense, focused and chewy. Broad and complex, gaining depth, with subtle herb, espresso and mocha notes, and ending with a potent finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

(68% cabernet sauvignon, 22% merlot, 5% cabernet sauvignon and 5% petit verdot): Good bright medium ruby. Crushed blackberry, licorice, tar and violet on the nose, along with a minerality that carries through onto the palate. Sweet, broad and deep, offering lovely chewy fruit and excellent lift. Dominated by its dark berry, licorice and minerally cabernet sauvignon element. Finishes with broad, fine-grained tannins.

About This Producer

The historic State Lane Vineyard, in the heart of the Napa Valley, was first leased by Beringer Estates in 1972 and was used to launch Beringer's famous Private Reserve Cabernet. The Kapcsandys purchased the property in May, 2000 and in 2001 teamed up with legendary winemaker Helen Turley and her viticulturist husband John Wetlaufer. After careful research, they discovered a unique vineyard with multiple micro-geological conditions and decided to redevelop the vineyard for its utmost potential and produce world-class red wines under the Kapcsandy label. The first two vintages - 2003 and 2004 - were produced by Helen Turley. For 2005 Rob Lawson, the winemaker at Napa Wine Company for the past 16 years, was brought aboard and in 2007, Denis Malbec became the sole winemaking consultant.
