Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 90(+?)

(15% alcohol): Bright, full ruby-red. Red cherry, red licorice and pungent herbs on the nose. Supple, sweet and silky on entry, with reticent but pure red berry and flint flavors complicated by fresh herbs, flowers and a wild element of underbrush; firmed by solid acidity. Finishes with substantial building tannins and serious structure. Very suave and classically dry, but I would have liked a little more fruit for a higher score. The bottle's label carries a 30th vendemmia designation.

The sawdust and graphite aromas turn to cherry and raspberry flavors in this vibrant, complex red. A beam of sweet fruit imparts energy and resonance, carrying this to a long, expansive aftertaste. The finish shows potential.

About This Producer

The Casanova di Neri farm began in 1971 when Giovanni Neri bought a large estate within the territory of Montalcino. Over the years their continuing goal has been the search for and purchasing of land which they believe to be optimal for growing high quality grapes. The result is that today they have about 36 hectares of vineyards divided between four quite distinct areas: il Pietradonice in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, le Cetine in Sant'Angelo in Colle, il Cerretalto and il Fiesole near the farmhouse of the same name facing Montalcino.

Recent accolades include a perfect WS 100-point score for the 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto and WS Wine of the Year honors for the 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova.

Wine Varietal: Sangiovese

Italyâ??s most popular grape, Sangiovese is the top grape used in Tuscany including Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and many of Italyâ??s â??Super Tuscans.â?? At least 14 clones of Sangiovese exist which are grouped into the Sangiovese grosso and Sangiovese piccolo families. Sangiovese thrives in a warm climate and consists of over 10% of Italyâ??s vineyard acreage (covering almost a quarter million acres). Over the past decade Sangiovese has become increasingly popular and successful in California as well. Typical descriptors for Sangiovese include candied or dried cherry, citrus, leather, violets and tea.
