Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 98

Possibly the "wine of the vintage," the 2008 boasts an inky/blue/purple color as well as a glorious perfume of spring flowers, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, camphor, truffles and crushed rocks. With great fruit on the attack and mid-palate, a medium to full-bodied, multidimensional mouthfeel and a skyscraper-like finish, this prodigious effort over-delivers, even for this phenomenal terroir.

This makes you sit up and pay attention, with a stunning array of loam, Turkish coffee, roasted cedar and licorice root flavors coursing along the bottom half, while sleek plum, blackberry and anise notes drive over the top. The mouthwatering finish is loaded with dark fruit, all harnessed by iron-clad grip.

(90% merlot and 10% cabernet franc; 27 hl/ha; 100% new oak) Inky-purple color. Brooding, complex aromas of blueberry juice, air-dried plum and balsamic vinegar, with a touch of dusty minerality. Sweet and massive on entry, this conveys a serious sense of huge power but also impeccable balance to its black fruit and sweet spice flavors. Finishes clean and impressively long, with ultra-silky tannins that coat the gums and won't let go.

55% Cabernet Franc (picked 20 Oct), 45% Merlot (picked 17 and 18 Oct). Deliberately not picked for over-ripeness. 27 hl/ha. 16,000 bottlesPolished blackish purple. Wonderfully exotic and ripe on the nose - very nervy and exciting. Really caresses the palate. Lovely sensuality with lots of acidity and tension but fully ripe black fruit flavours. So clean and brilliant! So finely etched. Still very dry on the end but not excessively so. Great punch and energy. Definitely like an electric shock.

About This Producer

Classed as Grand Cru Classe A, the best of the appellation, Chateau Ausone sits on a hill just south of St. Emilion. The chateau is named after the Roman poet Ausonius who owned over 100 acres of vineyard around Saint Emilion. The vineyards grow 50% Cabernet Franc and 50% Merlot grapes, producing approximately 2,000 cases a year. The chateau has a long history dating back to medieval times. After struggling during the first part of the twentieth century, the estate has seen a resurgence with the hires of Pascal Delbeck in 1976 and consultant Michel Rolland in recent years. Wines from Chateau Ausone require at least 10 years of bottle age after which they develop exotic flavors such as currant, black cherry and spice. Chateau Ausone also produces a second wine called Chapelle d'Ausone.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
