($52) Full ruby-red. Plum, spicecake, chocolate, mocha and nutty oak on the nose. Lush on entry, then compellingly sweet and plump in the middle, with a distinctly confectionery quality to its mouthfilling fruit. This will never be mistaken for an Old World wine. With its exotic sweetness, soft tannins and chocolatey oak, this is a guilty pleasure.

It is hard to find much better Merlot than Foley's 2007 Merlot. This is a blockbuster wine as well. Opulent, exuberant, with that certain 'wowâ?� factor from layers of melted fudge, espresso roast, plum, fig, and black cherry and currants, there is an impression of sweetness because of the high levels of alcohol/glycerin. This is a whopper to drink over the next 14+ years.

A distinctive style, loaded with high-toned, toasty oak, but there's more than enough depth and richness to carry this. Aromas of currant and espresso lead to supple, structured plum, roasted anise and spice flavors. Tannins tighten the finish. Needs time.

Opened and decanted for 3 hours. Beautiful aromas of dark cherries, black currant, raspberries. A hint of heat prickles the nose. The body was definitely a "wow" for us -- vanilla, tobacco, plums, black currant. Not everything was together though. Finish was long with a battle between sweet and somewhat harsher tannins. The alcohol was nearly over the top, but just pulled back from the brink. I think this bottle has a lot of potential, but we are going to let the others rest for at least ther next 2 - 3 years.

About This Producer


Winemaker Robert Foley began his winemaking career in 1977, working at Heitz Winery before becoming founding winemaker at Markham, where he developed the style of Merlot that helped make the variety a mega-trend in the 1980s. Following his success at Markham, Foley is perhaps best known for his tenure with Pride and Paloma. He still keeps a coterie of clients including School House, Switchback Ridge and Hourglass. He founded Robert Foley Vineyards in 1999 and was named Food & Wine Magazine's Winemaker of the Year in 2007.
