Inky purple. Superripe aromas of cassis, cherry preserves and dark chocolate, with complicating notes of licorice and mint. Densely packed and chewy, offering palate-coating black and blue fruit flavors that show serious depth and building sweetness. A hint of smoked meat comes up on the long, clinging finish, which is framed by broad, pliant tannins. I'm not exactly sure what I'd serve with this but it would definitely have to be part of a dead mammal and it would be roasted, braised or grilled.

Meaty flavors step forward in this rich, decadent Shiraz, piling savory soy sauce and wet earth nuances around the core of dark, dense blackberry. Shows depth and power.

Easily the best Shiraz I have ever tasted. Full body, deep inky color, and peppery delicious finish. A truly perfect bottle of wine, down to the beautiful label.

Perhaps we jumped the gun on this one, but it was absolutely perfect. Easily the best American Syrah I have tasted. Soft Tanins. Inky in color. Slow legs. Cedar. Gooseberry, Garrigue. Long finish. Silky, fleshy, texture. Full bodied.

Delicious blackberries and other spicy fuits brimming over the wine glass. Deep inky color and powerful enticing nose. The best Shiraz I have ever had, and I have tasted at least 5 vintages of Grange.

This wine actually showed a lot like the 2006 but a little more closed. An absolutely gorgeous nose -- sweet vanillan, blackberry, and dark, sweet plums. Just a hint of spice (allspice, cinnamon?) On first taste, this literally was like blackberry liqueur poured over warm stones. Not overly ripe or fruit bomb though. The rich glycerin was perfectly balanced by some light acidity. Not a tannin to be found. The finish felt a little tight -- perhaps a couple of years in the cellar will make this a truly remarkable wine. My number 2 WOTN, number 3 for the group.

About This Producer

In 1998 Jayson Woodbridge released his first vintage, one Cabernet, made from his own 10-acre Kayli Morgan Vineyard. The goal was to create a "Right Bank" style Cabernet from those clay soils. With the second vintage, he earned scores in the mid-90s and sold the wine for double the previous vintage. In addition to the Cabernet Sauvignon Kayli Morgan Vineyard, Woodbridge produces a Howell Mountain Cabernet from The Ark Vineyard and a single-vineyard Shiraz from his Ancient Way Vineyard in Barossa Valley.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
