($55; 100% sangiovese; 14% alcohol) Good full red with a palish rim. Pure, superripe aromas of red cherry, violet, iodine and nutmeg. Superrich, highly concentrated and seamless, with densely packed flavors of raspberry, dark plum and marzipan. Finishes creamy-rich and explosively long, with a pretty violet note. This was so good I really had trouble letting the glass go. It's also the only time I can remember Fontalloro outclassing Rancia (of which I am a huge fan) by such a wide margin, something I had noticed even when tasting barrel samples of these two wines in the estate's cellar two years ago. I'd wait a good five years on this one, then enjoy it for another two decades. Proof positive that sangiovese is one of the world's great grape varieties.

The 2007 Fontalloro is round, sweet and inviting, very much in keeping with the style of the vintage. The fruit tends towards the redder end of the spectrum vis-a-vis the Rancia and the Fontalloro seems to possess a touch more freshness. Floral, spiced notes add lift on the finish. As attractive as the 2007 Fontalloro is, and it is very pretty, the wine does not have a particularly bright track record of developing the noblest aromas and flavors in bottle. In my experience, it is better to err on the side of youth in deciding when to drink Fontalloro.

Tightly wound right now, this blood red Sangiovese promises to blossom into a stunning wine in a few years. If you can't wait, decant for as long as possible before giving it a try. After 3 hours, it had begun to show the depths of its flavors.

Generous from the get-go, it's framework of darkly hued, richly nuanced Berardenga Sangiovese comes shining thorough. Ripe black cherry, earthydamp forest floor, tobacco and a hint of spice harmonize to create an alluring aromatic essence. Dense and full bodied on the palate with a lovely level of richness punctuated with nicely balancing acidity followed by excellent tannin integration and a deliciously long finish complete the package.

For many people this was the wine of the night and elicted the most superlatives - powerful and explosive, all kinds of floral notes on the nose with depth underneath, a fantastic expression of Sangiovese. Really had the kind of acid that begs for food. Dark nearly opaque color, dark berries, dark chocolate. Finish just so lasting and so much going on. Excited for the next bottle!

About This Producer

Felsina, for all of its current, well-deserved respect and fame, is the product of an ancient and humanitarian history. In the 12th century this estate was a roadside hospital directed by Benedictine monks who tended to the pilgrims and merchants traveling the Strata de Rancia.

The winery is located within the most south-eastern part of the Chianti Classico zone near Siena. In 1961, Domenico Poggiali purchased the property and 57 hectares of vineyards. His son-in-law, Giuseppe Mazzocolin, currently runs the estate with the assistance of renowned oenologic consultant Franco Bernabei and vineyard overseer Agostino Buracchi. Together, they have wrought a portfolio of wines that recognize the mystical world of Sangioveto.

The Cru Rancia and the Fontalloro are two of the premiere wines coming out of Tuscany today.

Wine Varietal: Sangiovese

Italyâ??s most popular grape, Sangiovese is the top grape used in Tuscany including Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and many of Italyâ??s â??Super Tuscans.â?? At least 14 clones of Sangiovese exist which are grouped into the Sangiovese grosso and Sangiovese piccolo families. Sangiovese thrives in a warm climate and consists of over 10% of Italyâ??s vineyard acreage (covering almost a quarter million acres). Over the past decade Sangiovese has become increasingly popular and successful in California as well. Typical descriptors for Sangiovese include candied or dried cherry, citrus, leather, violets and tea.
