Wine Spectator | Rating: 94

Ripe, fleshy and generous, but not nearly over the top, with gorgeous cherry, pomegranate, black olive and bay leaf flavors arching beautifully and swirling through the long, supple finish.

($60) Bright purple. Explosively perfumed bouquet of raspberry, blueberry, spicecake, potpourri and anise, with a subtle mocha undertone. More serious on the palate, where chewy cherry-cola and licorice qualities are complicated by notes of violet pastille and black cardamom. Large-scaled, fat and spicy, with strong finishing grip and supple tannins.

Site Blog: Vinography: A Wine Blog Inky garnet in the glass, this wine has a deep earthy nose of wet dirt and rich blackberrie pie. In the mouth it is smooth and silky, with great acid balance and ruich juicy flavors of dark boysenberry, blackberry, and cassis flavors that linger into a long finish.

A fruit bomb to the nose, lots of berry flavors. Taste very fruity too, some spices and pepper.

For the first time, didn't decant this full fruity gem. Good but not at its best.

About This Producer

The "two hands" are Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz, who formed the company in 1999 with the clear objective of making the best possible Shiraz-based wines from prized regions within Australia. In 2000 they started with just 17 tons of fruit from the McLaren Vale and Padthaway wine regions. From the beginning the wines were very well received at home and abroad, with a healthy stream of reviews, culminating in 2004 with Robert Parker pronouncing Two Hands as "the finest negociant operation south of the equator."

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
