As impossible as it might seem, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon takes things to another level. An exquisite, celestial bouquet melds into endless layers of fruit as this rich, voluptuous wine blossoms on the palate. Full-bodied and seductive, the 2007 conquers all of the senses with its head spinning, beautiful personality. As always, Screaming Eagle is a bit more restrained next to Napa Valley's other heavy hitters, yet the pedigree of this opulent vintage comes through in spades. A kaleidoscope of aromas and flavors flows through to the creamy, textured finish. I have tasted the 2007 several times recently. It was always been perfect. My only issue with the 2007 is that it appears to be shutting down just a touch. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027.

A supple, sophisticated, elegant and stylish wine that wows you with purity, finesse and understated nuances. Full-bodied, with a core of red and black cherry, currant, mineral and sage, ending with a long, layered, persistent, graceful finish, all in a style that distinguishes itself from most Napa Cabernets.

($750; includes 20% merlot and 3% cabernet franc) Good full, deep ruby. Quite Bordeaux-like on the nose, with notes of bitter cherry, dark chocolate, tobacco, cedar and iron, plus a whiff of aromatic resin. Then opulent on the palate but at the same time juicy, precise and very intensely flavored, with terrific inner-mouth lift to the flavors of currant, spices, brown sugar and pungent minerality. Finishes impressively long, spreading out to saturate the entire palate. Boasts a terrific spine for aging.

About This Producer

Screaming Eagle Winery and Vineyards is a California wines estate producing limited amounts of varietal wine to the small quantities produced and high prices commanded, their wines are considered cult wines. The winery is located in Oakville, California north of the town of Napa in the Napa Valley.

Jean Phillips, a former real estate agent bought the 23 hectare vineyard in 1986 which was planted to produce a mix of varieties, most of which Phillips sold to various Napa wineries. With all white varieties but for 4,000 square meters, approximately 80 vines of Cabernet Sauvignon. Philips sought the opinions of Robert Mondavi Winery employees on the commercial potential of her wine before hiring Richard Peterson as a consultant and subsequently met Peterson??s daughter, Heidi Peterson Barrett, who became her winemaker. The 1992 vintage, through a combination of very low production numbers and highly positive reviews (wine critic Robert Parker awarded the wine 99 points), resulted in Screaming Eagle wine sold at unusually high prices.

In 2006 the estate sold to Stanley Kroenke. In an ongoing replanting strategy, the vineyard manager David Abreu is employed to oversee the process. The vineyards tended by vineyard foreman Jorge Delgado while the current winemaker is Nick Gislason.

The estate has gained unprecedented acclaim in such a short period of time and the wins can be found in charity auction and investment portfolios for unprecedented dollar amounts. The quality is undeniable and the production of an average 700 cases makes this incredibly rare and precious. To note, the 2005 vintage produced only 400 cases.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
