One of the finest Merlots being made in Napa is the 2007 Merlot (87% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Sauvignon). It has evolved gorgeously since tasted from barrel last year. This sumptuous wine offers beautiful melted chocolate, cocoa, and espresso notes intermixed with black cherry, plum, fig, and blackberry fruit. This opulent, full-bodied, sexy, prodigious California Merlot should give KapcsandyâÂ?Â?s RobertaâÂ?Â?s Reserve a run for its money over the next 15-20 years.

A dense, powerful core is wrapped inside a plush and velvety exterior, with currant and espresso aromas. Delivers layered flavors of plum, grilled rosemary and cedar, finishing with firm but ripe tannins.

($75) Good full ruby-red. Superripe aromas of plum, tar, bittersweet chocolate, truffle, smoke and tomato. Densely packed and rather full-blown but with surprising acid spine; deep black fruit flavors are complicated by a wild, gamey quality and a tarry note. Winemaker Green describes the 2007s as tight wines, "like the 2005s."

Drunk without decanting but over a period of about 3h. Never came around. A bit disappointing at this stage: quite green with vegetal undertones, tannins, green pepper, and olive notes. Maybe it will evolve as it seems to have a solid tannic core, but definitely needs a few more years before I would consider drinking again.

About This Producer

Pahlmeyer started over 20 years ago when former trial attorney Jayson Pahlmeyer decided to turn his passion for wine into a career in Napa Valley. After studying viticulture and oenology at the University of Bordeaux, Pahlmeyer returned to the United States and produced his first wine (a Bordeaux blend) in 1986. Under the guidance of Pahlmyer, and current winemaker Erin Green, this reputation endures, annually establishing the estate as one of the finest producers of Bordeaux blends, Merlot, and Chardonnay in California.

Wine Varietal: Merlot

Merlot shares many of the same profile descriptors as Cabernet Sauvignon including plum, blackberry, chocolate and mocha. Bordeaux's Right Bank, such as in Pomerol and St.-Emilion, is the traditional home to this red grape, but it is grown all over the world. Merlot is either bottled on its own or is blended with other red grapes.
