Professional Reviews For This Wine

Burghound | Rating: 88-90

(4 parcels of vines totaling 1.2 ha - two-thirds of which is from Charmes proper with the remainder from Mazoyères) An elegant combination of wood spice and freshly crushed notes of cranberry, strawberry and raspberry merge into supple, naturally sweet and round flavors that retain a good sense of precision on the mostly fruit-driven barely middle weight flavors that are delicious but do not deliver grand cru level depth and length.

About This Producer

Jean Raphet finally passed control of the domaine to his son Gerard in 2002, though his son had been tending the vineyards for over a decade. The wines from this property are remarkable and brilliant renditions of Pinot Noir. Equal parts caressing finesse, fruit purity and aromatic bliss, they have excellent track records at all levels. From the Bourgogne, to the mere cases production of the Grand Cru Clos de Beze, Raphet wines are consistently palate pleasing.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
