The exquisite, dark ruby/purple-tinged 2007 Pinot Noir Reuling Vineyard offers up copious aromas of blue, red, and black fruits in addition to terrific acidity, a broad expansive mouthfeel, and roasted meat, black raspberry, wild strawberry, and foresty flora characteristics. It is a big, concentrated Pinot Noir that makes a mockery of all the over-cropped Pinots that are promoted as "authentic expressions of terroir," when in fact, they are made from over-cropped vineyards and prey on those not familiar with what top-flight Pinot Noirs should taste like.

Dark, ripe and expressive, full-bodied and very complex, with tiers of black cherry, plum, spice, subtle earth and mocha-chocolate notes. Despite its depth of flavor, this sits elegantly on the palate and ends with a delicate combination of flavors.

(15.5% alcohol; half from a Vosne-Romanee clone and half from a Calera clone) Deep red with ruby highlights. Nose dominated by purple and blue fruits, along with violet, black tea and a whiff of dark berry pastille; showing little sign of the heavy-toast new oak. Sappy flavors of crushed black fruits are quite closed, even a bit youthfully tough, revealing little easy sweetness today and superb underlying tannic structure. Less complex today than the UV: in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this shut down in bottle for at least a few years and emerged to merit an even higher rating. From a cooler site, harvested late. Aubert did a 45-day maceration for his pinots in 2007, sealing the tank to retain the CO2 He believes this allowed the tannins to flesh out at the end of this process.

About This Producer

Mark Aubert's four Sonoma Coast vineyard-designate Chardonnays - Lauren, Reuling, Quarry and Ritchie - have risen to cult status at a dizzying speed. Production is a limited 4,000 cases and the wines are available via the winery's mailing list. Aubert's career in winemaking reads like a fantasy, with his 1989 start as assistant winemaker at Peter Michael under the tutelage of Helen Turley, to his time at Colgin and Bryant Family. His eponymous wines are exemplary renditions of Chardonnay, replete with the rich bounty of the terroirs from which he sources the fruit. At the same time, they reflect his adept oenological hand, and maintain a focused balance of flavor and purity.

Aubert also makes several Pinot Noirs sourced from the Sonoma Coast as well as a "right-bank" Bordeaux style blend from Napa's Howell Mountain.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
