The 2007 Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard reveals superb minerality and acidity, a laser-like precision, a light green/straw color, a steely, full-bodied mouthfeel, and plenty of orange blossom, lemon oil, creme brulee, and honeysuckle notes. This powerhouse should drink well for a decade.

($80; 15.6% alcohol with a pH of 3.4; from old Wente clones) Medium yellow. Aromas of lemon drop, wild herbs and honey, with a slightly candied character. Dense and thick but lively, with strong acidity and a floral element lifting the concentrated citrus fruit flavors. The wine's sweetness and silky texture are leavened by its firm acid spine, with a late note of green tea contributing piquancy. Actually rather backward today, with the dry, broad, citric finish showing superb persistence.

A rich, creamy style, with tiers of spicy fig, melon, hazelnut and nutmeg all folding together in a tightly focused core of flavors. Full-bodied and bold, without being heavy, ending with delicacy and finesse.

vanilla, roasted caramel, crem brulee on the nose. Very aromatic & full bodied. I wasn't picking up a lot of 'fruit' notes, mostly notes of oak influence. I didn't taste the citrus fruit that people say are typical of this wine. But, paradoxically, it did not taste over-oaked, but well balanced and full of flavor, which told me that there was big fruit in there. Impressive wine- more fruit/minerality would have given this a very high score from me.

About This Producer

Mark Aubert's four Sonoma Coast vineyard-designate Chardonnays - Lauren, Reuling, Quarry and Ritchie - have risen to cult status at a dizzying speed. Production is a limited 4,000 cases and the wines are available via the winery's mailing list. Aubert's career in winemaking reads like a fantasy, with his 1989 start as assistant winemaker at Peter Michael under the tutelage of Helen Turley, to his time at Colgin and Bryant Family. His eponymous wines are exemplary renditions of Chardonnay, replete with the rich bounty of the terroirs from which he sources the fruit. At the same time, they reflect his adept oenological hand, and maintain a focused balance of flavor and purity.

Aubert also makes several Pinot Noirs sourced from the Sonoma Coast as well as a "right-bank" Bordeaux style blend from Napa's Howell Mountain.

Wine Varietal: Chardonnay

Arguably the best dry white wine grape out there, Chardonnay is grown all over the globe. In addition to being the backbone of fine white Burgundies, Chardonnay is also one of the three major grape varieties used in producing Champagne. Susceptible to a myriad of complications, Chardonnay berries are relatively small, thin-skinned, fragile, and oxidize easily. Chardonnay grapes can be sensitive to winemaking techniques and more difficult to handle from harvest to bottling than many other varieties. Some producers will use malolactic fermentation (where harsher malic acid is turned into softer lactic acid and carbon dioxide) to reduce crispness and acidity and add a creamy, buttery texture to wines. The "oaky" character of some Chardonnays comes from fermenting or aging which takes place in oak barrels. Once barrel-aged, Chardonnay may take on notes of vanilla or toast. While Chardonnay is produced worldwide, the best can be found in France, the United States, Argentina, Chile, Australia, Italy, New Zealand, and South Africa. Typical descriptors for Chardonnay include mineral, green apple, citrus, tropical fruits, vanilla, butter and smokiness.
