Burghound | Rating: 89

(from Sonoma Coast fruit that produced 200 cases; bottled at 13.6%, $39) A relatively high-toned nose of cherry, raspberry and background notes of cranberry that slide gracefully into delicious, round and naturally sweet yet detailed middle weight flavors that are sappy, balanced and persistent. This isn't quite at the level of the best here because it lacks the same depth but it certainly is pretty.

($42) Pale red. Intensely floral aromas of wild strawberry, raspberry, rose and magnolia. Fresh, sharply focused red fruit flavors are impressively pure and nicely framed by silky tannins. The mineral note gains power with air and carries through a long, seductively pure finish. I really like this wine's impression of weightlessness.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
