International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

($38) Bright ruby-red. Vibrant, high-toned aromas of musky blackberry and pepper, with a whiff of exotic fruits. Juicy and firm in the mouth, with pliant black cherry and black pepper flavors complicated by notes of mushroom and earth along with an exotic suggestion of apricot pit. Finishes firmly tannic and long. A rather brisk style-and at the low end of the alcohol range among these '07s, at a mere 15.5%.

About This Producer

Making "big reds" has been Larry Turley's passion since giving up his co-ownership of Frog's Leap Winery in 1993. Turley Wine Cellars is run by Larry and his wife Suzanne. Larry's sister, winemaker Helen Turley, made the wines here until 1995. Now the honor goes to Ehren Jordan, who also makes wines for Neyers. With a focus on producing old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, Turley sources fruit from vineyards some of which date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Both the Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs have a dark, saturated, inky color, with intense fruit flavors that make unforgettable statements about the power and complexity these varieties may attain.

Wine Varietal: Zinfandel

Zinfandel is a black grape variety of Croatian descent. With no ties to France, Zinfandel has actually been linked to the Primitivo grape of Italy, but California is where the majority of Zinfandel is grown. This variety possesses extremely versatile characteristics from light and fruity, to jammy and ripe with high alcohol. Growing Zinfandel can be difficult due to its packed clusters and short stems, which make the vines prone to uneven ripening and mildew. Preferring a warm climate, Zinfandel is also grown in other western states in the United States as well as in Australia and South Africa. Typical descriptors for Zinfandel include red berry fruits, raspberry, blackberry, anise and pepper.
