Intense flavors of black currant, cherry, cedar and licorice are reminiscent of a fine Bordeaux. Concentrated, yet stylish and elegant, with great breed and a lingering aftertaste of fruit, spice and mineral. Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Merlot.

The 2007 Sammarco is a showstopper. A dazzling bouquet leads to layers of rich dark fruit in this superb, racy wine. The tannins are all about finesse. This isn't a blockbuster Sammarco, but rather it is a wine that impresses for its sexy personality and fabulous overall balance. The 2007 Sammarco is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Sangiovese and 5% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.

(a blend of cabernet sauvignon, sangiovese and merlot; 14.5% alcohol): Dark ruby. Expressive aromas of plum, mocha, cinnamon and herbs. Dense, broad and pliant, with good weight and a strong herbal component to its red fruit and spicy oak flavors. The persistent tannic finish is a little chunky, offering lingering notes of leather, cocoa and tobacco and with a vegetal nuance and a touch of alcoholic warmth. Large-scaled and impressive, but not as refined as some recent vintages of Sammarco.

a really fine Italian stallion. some years to go before it hits its prime. still tannic, but enough fruit to carry the day if you like them big and bold.

I liked this a lot. Acidic and quite tannic still, but nice flavors and went really well with food.

About This Producer

The estate is located to the south of Panzano, that glorious village in the "Conca d'Oro" valley that is haven - and heaven - for so many cool climate Chiantis and Super Tuscans. The estate, S. Lucia in Faulle, has been owned by the Di Napoli Rampolla family since 1739, but the first wines weren't produced until the 1970s. Today, Maurizia, and her brother Luca Di Napoli Rampolla manage the property with the expert guidance of agronomist and winemaker, Giacomo Tachis.

The family practices a thorough biodynamic regimen (including the bulls' horns!) and follows the lunar cycles prescribed therein. The calcare and pyrite-laden soils are a key ingredient in what the terroir imparts to these exquisite wines. Manual harvesting, hand selection of the grapes, and primary (alcoholic) and secondary (malolactic) fermentation in barriques completes the transformation from mere grape juice into wines of tremendous proportions.

Wine Varietal: Sangiovese

Italyâ??s most popular grape, Sangiovese is the top grape used in Tuscany including Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and many of Italyâ??s â??Super Tuscans.â?? At least 14 clones of Sangiovese exist which are grouped into the Sangiovese grosso and Sangiovese piccolo families. Sangiovese thrives in a warm climate and consists of over 10% of Italyâ??s vineyard acreage (covering almost a quarter million acres). Over the past decade Sangiovese has become increasingly popular and successful in California as well. Typical descriptors for Sangiovese include candied or dried cherry, citrus, leather, violets and tea.
