($50) Deep, bright ruby. A complex bouquet displays scents of black raspberry, kirsch, potpourri and smoky minerals. Pliant red and dark berry flavors are framed by silky tannins and pick up a deeper cola quality with air. The dark berry notes dominate the impressively pure and seductively sweet finish. I wouldn't hesitate to drink this now, but expect that it will reward another five years or so of patience.

The 2007 Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard exhibits deep raspberry, blueberry, and boysenberry notes with hints of clove and spring flowers. It is medium-bodied, elegant, and fresh, with lovely fruit and texture. It should drink well for 7-8 years.

(From Anderson Valley fruit - 536 cases produced and bottled at 14.7%; $50) A ripe red berry fruit and menthol-suffused nose merges into rich and relatively full-bodied flavors that also possess excellent depth and a moderately robust character as the tannins are firm without being aggressive, all wrapped in a noticeably warm finish even when the appropriate serving temperature is properly maintained. I like the depth and size but the warmth is enough where it compromises the overall sense of balance just enough to prevent the Savoy from ascending to the next level.

About This Producer

Radio Coteau works exclusively with small, cool-climate vineyard sites in western Sonoma County. Winegrower Eric Sussman's first vintage at the helm was 2001, after spending the years prior gaining experience with organic winegrowing in Washington and French winemaking in Bordeaux and Burgundy. Learning from the masters at the Chateaux Baron Philippe de Rothschild in 1995 and Domaines Comte Armand and Jacques Prieur in 1996, Eric returned stateside with a strong commitment to producing wines with a true "sense of place." The winery crafts Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Zinfandel, primarily from designated sites.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
