Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 91

($45) Bright purple. Ripe red and dark berry aromas with complicating notes of licorice and sassafras. Smooth, sappy, penetrating blackberry and cherry flavors are given spine by gentle acidity. Finishes with impressive breadth and lingering sweetness-and little in the way of tannins to get in the way of early enjoyment.

The wine of the night far and away. Had a cork issue necessitating decanting - which was a good idea nonetheless. This was powerful, deep, complex, evolved in the glass, dark violet Grenache-based effort with a floral nose and fruit that so effortlessly glided over the palate. Beautiful and hedonistic. Would love to try another one but there are other 07 CdPs to be had. Would have years to come.

About This Producer

Domaine Giraud is a collaborative effort between husband and wife team Pierre and Mireille Giraud. Starting in 1974 the couple began producing wine from 10 acres of vines which they tended as tenant farmers. After gradually acquiring several plots of their own land, the couple turned the ancient family distillery into a winemaking facility in 1981 and started bottling estate wines as Domaine Giraud.

The estate is now manged by Pierre and Mireille's children, Marie and Francois, and it stretches over 47 acres of land with the vines planted on ideal Chateauneuf du Pape terroir. Red wines are produced from 100-year-old Grenache vines, as well as plots of Mourvedre and young Syrah. For the white wines, the family grows Clairette, Bourboulenc, Grenache Blanc, and Roussanne.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
