($75) Bright red. An explosively perfumed bouquet displays blackberry, rose and violet oil, gardenia, cinnamon, mace and smoky minerals. Fat, palate-staining red and dark berry flavors reach every corner of the palate, betraying no rough edges, tannins or warmth. Gains energy with air, finishing with nervy berry and cherry skin notes and excellent clarity. This is the type of wine that I'd like to drink by itself.

From a steep hillside vineyard, the 2007 Zinfandel Jackass Vineyard reveals enormous quantities of pepper, fruitcake, mincemeat, roasted herbs, black and red fruits, a tremendous smokiness, and an unctuous texture with amazing viscosity as well as richness. There are slightly fewer than 400 cases of this beauty, which should drink well for a decade or more.

About This Producer

Martinelli Winery is steeped in tradition - the founders were Giuseppe Martinelli and Luisa Vellutini, originally from a village in Tuscany, who eloped as teenagers and landed in Sonoma in 1887. Though resources were scarce, Giuseppe, armed with extensive viticultural knowledge, earned and borrowed enough to purchase a bit of land - the current 60-degree slope which is now known as Jackass Hill Vineyard. The first vines planted were Zinfandel and Muscat Alexandria. When Giuseppe passed away in 1918, his youngest son, Leno, just 12 years old, became responsible for tending the family's steep hillside. His family said only a jackass would be stubborn enough to farm that torturous slope and thus, it earned its name.

In 1973 Lee, Sr., Leno's son, took over management of his Uncle Tony Bondi's estate in the Russian River Valley and made his mark as a premium grape grower. He and his wife Carolyn realized the potential of their crops and started their own winery and tasting room in two converted hop barns. A chance meeting with Helen Turley in 1993 introduced a slew of progressive viticultural and cellar practices that catapulted them to the next level.

Wine Varietal: Zinfandel

Zinfandel is a black grape variety of Croatian descent. With no ties to France, Zinfandel has actually been linked to the Primitivo grape of Italy, but California is where the majority of Zinfandel is grown. This variety possesses extremely versatile characteristics from light and fruity, to jammy and ripe with high alcohol. Growing Zinfandel can be difficult due to its packed clusters and short stems, which make the vines prone to uneven ripening and mildew. Preferring a warm climate, Zinfandel is also grown in other western states in the United States as well as in Australia and South Africa. Typical descriptors for Zinfandel include red berry fruits, raspberry, blackberry, anise and pepper.
