The finest wine I've ever tasted from the Sabon's (although the 2010 gives it a run for its money), the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a flawless example of what this estate is capable of in a great year. Full-bodied, decadent and layered, with incredible purity and freshness, it boasts heavenly notes of blackberry, chocolate, licorice, red wine marinade and roasted meat. It's a monumental wine that offers a singular, yet hedonistic drinking experience that should not be missed.

This is awash in fruit -- plum, boysenberry, fig and blackberry -- all seamlessly intertwined, while hints of graphite, melted licorice, black tea and violet fill the available space. The long finish has great latent grip.

($115) Inky purple. Hypnotic bouquet of dark berries, flowers and spices complicated by black olive, sandalwood and star anise. Lush, creamy and liqueur-like in its depth and sweetness, offering palate-enveloping boysenberry and blueberry flavors and exotic floral pastille and spicecake qualities. Fine-grained tannins add grip and focus to an endless sweet, floral aftertaste.

Grenache Noir 80%, Syrah 10%, Mourvèdre 10%. Organic.Relatively simple gamey Grenache. Racy and transparent. Lots of energy and good balance even if not extreme. Very clean and brisk. And on the very end – quite a bit of alcohol!

About This Producer

Up until 1973, patriarch and proprietor Aime Sabon sold the entire production of this estate to cooperatives. In 1991, his son Christophe took over the running of the Domaine La Janasse, named after a family camp in Courthezon. The grapes that go into the "Cuvee Chaupin" come from a parcel of vines planted in 1912 and produce the pure, graceful, yet opulent and firmly structured wines for which the domaine has become renowned. Roughly a quarter of these wines are AOC Chateauneuf du Pape.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
