These two brilliant vintages from Laurent Charvin include a superb 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape displaying a personality reminiscent of a hypothetical blend of his 1990 and 1998. A blend of 85% Grenache and the rest equal parts Mourvedre, Vaccarese, and Syrah, all aged in old tanks, it exhibits a deep ruby/purple color as well as a sumptuous bouquet of black raspberries, kirsch liqueur, and subtle notions of underbrush and nori seaweed wrapper. Rayas-like in its ethereal richness, length, and texture with a sense of lightness despite its weight, this beauty possesses superb purity, equilibrium, texture, and elegance.

Even though this is crammed with fig and currant paste notes, it maintains a racy, silky feel, thanks to perfectly embedded structure and a complex backdrop of incense, charred mesquite, shiso leaf and freshly ground espresso. This has ample grip, but it's extremely graceful'a deft act in this vintage.

($80) Vivid ruby. Mineral-driven aromas of strawberry, black raspberry, potpourri and allspice, plus a whiff of white pepper. Very fresh, palate-staining red fruit flavors are complicated by floral pastille, baking spice and smoky herb nuances. Very deep in flavor but impressively light on its feet, finishing with strong minerality and spicy persistence. (Weygandt-Metzler Importing, Unionville PA

I believe the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape is the finest wine ever made at Charvin. Their wines never achieve a lot of color, but this is one of the most saturated ones they have produced. The blend from the 45- to 50-year-old vines is 85% Grenache and the rest equal parts Syrah, Mourvedre, and Vaccarese, all aged in cement tanks prior to being bottled unfiltered. A terrific nose of kirsch, lavender, licorice, forest floor, and spice box soars from the glass of this full-bodied effort. With fabulous density, a multidimensional mouthfeel, and a 45+-second finish this brilliant, elegant, feminine-styled wine is loaded with concentration and intensity. Like many 2007 Chateauneuf du Papes, the extraordinary fruit level makes it hard to resist. However, it will be even better in 3-5 years, and should last for 15-20

Site Blog: The Wine Forum In a closed place right now. What we did have hinted at being great, elegant and refined. Not a hot mess, like many CdP have been like lately. It should be opulent Grenache at its best when it comes around next. (93-96 range)

The wine was bad. It had a small dusting of green mold on the outside of the cork, underneath the foil, but the cork seemed otherwise intact. Storage was never an issue so this was very upsetting.

About This Producer

The father and son team of Gerard and Laurent Charvin define the quintessential boutique domaine. From their 8 hectares of Chateauneuf-du-Pape vineyards, a small amount is kept from the best lots for their own bottling. Just over 80% is Grenache, with Mourvedre, Syrah and Vaccarese rounding out the blend. This Chateauneuf-du-Pape is a premium production with a palate of red fruit and berries with elegant white pepper, pink peppercorn and sweet garrigue.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
