Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 94

($60) Bright medium red. Precise aromas of raspberry and minerals call to mind a wine from the southern Cote de Nuits. Urgent, sharply delineated yet utterly silky flavors of sweet berries and minerals saturate the palate. This wonderfully rich and substantial but classically dry wine offers an uncanny sappy quality and positively vibrates in the mouth. Finishes with broad, suave tannins and outstanding persistence. Forward floral perfume nose. On palate, kind of a bit plain, needs ageing.

About This Producer

Situated in the world's most southerly wine growing region, Central Otago, Felton Road has built a reputation as one of New Zealand's premier producers. Blair Walter heads the winemaking team, which focuses its efforts on Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling, all grown on gentle, north-facing slopes in Bannockburn. The team at Felton Road has been an adherent of biodynamic and organic viticulture since planting their first vineyard in 1991. Recently "discovered" by Robert Parker and other American critics, these handmade, expressive wines are truly at the forefront of Central Otago's wine wave.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
