The 2007 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia bursts onto the palate in a big, brooding expression of Sangiovese from Castelnuovo Berardenga. Muscular and dense to the core, the 2007 powers all the way through to the long finish. Hints of smoke, tar, leather and scorched earth emerge over time, but only with great reluctance. In a vintage where so many wines are open, the Rancia comes across as quite stubborn and in need of at least five more years in bottle. That said, it is a standout, not to mention one of the greatest values in fine, age-worthy wine. In a second tasting the 2007 Rancia came across as decidedly more elegant and restrained in style, so it will be interesting to see where this ultimately settles within the context of recent vintages.

($50; 100% sangiovese; 14% alcohol) Dark red. Fresh red cherry, bay leaf and underbrush aromas are complemented by a strong mineral nuance. Starts silky, then turns minerally, brisk and firm in the middle, showing a penetrating quality to the red cherry, ripe plum and delicate herbal flavors. Finishes seamless and very long, but I found this to be a somewhat more backward, imploded example of Rancia than usual.

Racy and rich, with chewy tannins that are polished and attractive. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a clean finish. Offers lots of richness.

This is a big wine, full bodied and quite tannic but the flavor profile will wow you. The complexity and layers shine with each taste with dark cherry, wild blueberry, wet stone, and a long finish. It settled down after the first night. This is a great wine

Refined, like an al fresco summer dinner in Tuscany, this glass-coating sangiovese unveils flavors of leather, rosemary and dark chocolate.

About This Producer

Felsina, for all of its current, well-deserved respect and fame, is the product of an ancient and humanitarian history. In the 12th century this estate was a roadside hospital directed by Benedictine monks who tended to the pilgrims and merchants traveling the Strata de Rancia.

The winery is located within the most south-eastern part of the Chianti Classico zone near Siena. In 1961, Domenico Poggiali purchased the property and 57 hectares of vineyards. His son-in-law, Giuseppe Mazzocolin, currently runs the estate with the assistance of renowned oenologic consultant Franco Bernabei and vineyard overseer Agostino Buracchi. Together, they have wrought a portfolio of wines that recognize the mystical world of Sangioveto.

The Cru Rancia and the Fontalloro are two of the premiere wines coming out of Tuscany today.

Italyâ??s most popular grape, Sangiovese is the top grape used in Tuscany including Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and many of Italyâ??s â??Super Tuscans.â?? At least 14 clones of Sangiovese exist which are grouped into the Sangiovese grosso and Sangiovese piccolo families. Sangiovese thrives in a warm climate and consists of over 10% of Italyâ??s vineyard acreage (covering almost a quarter million acres). Over the past decade Sangiovese has become increasingly popular and successful in California as well. Typical descriptors for Sangiovese include candied or dried cherry, citrus, leather, violets and tea.
