Wine Spectator | Rating: 92

Very ripe, but pure and juicy, with gorgeous raspberry and boysenberry flavors that race alongside licorice, graphite and dark tea notes. The long, silky finish has plenty of heft, but stays elegant.

($56) Full, bright red. Energetic aromas of black raspberry, cherry, rose and spicecake, with a hint of musky herbs. Weighty red and dark berry compote flavors are lifted by tangy minerality and complemented by candied flowers and anise. Finishes dense and chewy, with lingering notes of sweet dark fruits.

The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Safres is dominated by 95% Grenache and the rest Syrah, Mourvedre, and Cinsault, all from vines over 50 years old from holdings in the northeastern-most sector of the appellation. This wine exhibits tremendous spice box, sweet black cherries, a resiny pine forest note, and abundant pepper. In the mouth it is undeniably seductive, with full-bodied lushness, beautifully pure fruit, a textured mouthfeel, and a terrific finish. The freshness from the good acids give the wine uplift and vibrancy. This wine can be drunk now or cellared for 10-12 years.

Dark, blackish healthy crimson. Concentrated, rather dry, clarety style, then hugely impressive with wonderful tannin management and grace. A hint of black cherries and lovely texture. Very complete.

About This Producer

The exceptional quality and stylistic excellence of this property's wines are due to the dedication, versatility and forward thinking of both the late Jean-Denis Vacheron (who married the owner's daughter, Sylvie Pouzin) and the current winemaker, Bruno Gaspard. Jean-Denis and Sylvie had taken over from her father, Claude, in 1996. However, in 2002, Jean-Denis was killed in a traffic accident and Sylvie took the reins. Today, with the help of winemaker Gaspard and oenologist Philippe Cambie, she has catapulted the domaine into the elite of the southern Rhone. Despite holding only 9 hectares of land, the domaine boasts venerable neighbors (Chateau Rayas and Chateau Beaucastel), and its vineyards have elements of the best of both these estates. The rocky-sandy soils provide excellent drainage and impart minerality to these Chateauneuf-du-Papes.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
