Wine Advocate | Rating: 93

The dense ruby/purple-colored, full-bodied 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Prestige offers up notes of licorice, kirsch liqueur, lavender, and spice box. It is a superbly concentrated, opulent, flamboyant wine to drink now and over the next 15+ years.

This is very alluring, with warm raspberry confiture gliding over incense, spice bread and fig sauce notes. The long, silky finish has nice dark licorice and black tea notes. Fine-grained and persistent. Drink now through 2028. 1,250 cases made.

($90) Deep red. Expressive aromas of dark cherry, blackcurrant, Indian spices and smoky herbs. Round, supple dark fruit flavors coat the palate, sweetened by suave vanilla and cola qualities. Gains firmness on the focused, long finish. This could use some time to stretch out but is already quite impressive.

Transparent crimson. Straightforward ripe fruit that seems to belong more to the traditional bottling than special cuvée camp on the nose. Nice wine with real vivacity and ripe fruit and harmony but it reminds me more of some of the best straightforward traditional bottlings than a special cuvée. Masses of alcohol on the finish…. 80 year old vines on average apparently.

About This Producer

The Sabon family has a long history in Chateauneuf du Pape, and it is one of the oldest documented landholders in the region. Roger Sabon is the father of the three brothers who run the domain today - Jean-Jacques, Denis, and Gilbert. Since 2001, Didier Negron, son-in- law of Jean Jacques, has been the winemaker. Denis and his son Julien take care of the vineyards, and Delphine, daughter of Denis, runs the winery office. Today the domaine owns 15 ha. in Chateauneuf du Pape and 17 ha. in Roquemaure from which they produce Lirac and Cotes du Rhone.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
