Professional Reviews For This Wine

Burghound | Rating: 92-94

(from both Mazis Haut and Bas) A distinctly sauvage and somber dark berry fruit nose gives off notes of iron tinged warm earth, underbrush, crushed herbs and a hint of smoke followed by rich, full and moderately wooded full-bodied flavors that are notably powerful and supported by very firm tannins on the serious, long and backward finish. This too will require upward of two decades of cellar time so don't buy this if you're not prepared to be patient.

($231) Medium red. Quite closed on the nose, hinting at smoked meat and botanical herbs; smells drier than the Latricieres. Then wild on the palate but less expressive, with some cherry and raspberry perfume emerging with aeration. Finishes with serious, chewy tannins and a saline suggestion of soil. Very closed today and in need of extended cellaring.

Jancis Robinson | Rating: 17.5

Nervy nose. Satin texture - very polished. Bitter plums on the finish. Definite bitters but a racy wine with some real breeding. Very juicy.

About This Producer

Domaine Faively began in 1825 as a classic negociant firm and has since been passed down from father to son for nearly 200 years. During this time, it has become the largest owner of classified vineyards in the Cote de Nuits, Cote de Beanue and Cotes Chalonnaise. With 10 hectares of Grand Crus and 25 hectares of Premier Crus, including several monopoles, Faiveley is not only one of the largest producers in Burgundy, but also one of the finest estates in the world.

Today led by Erwan Faiveley, the Nuits-Saint-Georges-based operation is looking to expand the domaine's holdings of exceptional vineyards to ensure more control from vine to bottle across the entire portfolio. Faiveley's top wines are hand-bottled with no filtration, resulting in wines described by Clive Coates as "...supremely clean and elegant: definitive examples of Pinot Noir... above all they have richness and breed, the thumbprint of a master winemaker."

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
