Bright, deep red. Complex nose melds crushed berries, flowers, minerals and a whiff of game. Supple, sweet and oaky, with bright acidity framing the berry, coffee and cola flavors. This young wine has a high pitch and a firm spine, but comes across as quite pliant today, perhaps due to its sexy oak component.

About This Producer

This relatively young domaine - founded in the early 1980s - has a tragic history. Just as Denis Mortet, and his acclaimed wines, were attaining great success, M. Mortet took his own life (January 2006). However, we are left with a domaine whose immaculate vineyards span 10 hectares in 14 different appellations. The wines are intense, pure, undeniably rich pleasures to drink and age. 100% new French oak is used on all of the wines. The 2005s are the last vintage that he tended from vine to bottle and perfectly honor his limitless passion and commitment to making the very best he could.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
