While the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Georges de Latour is the strongest wine made at Beaulieu in many years, it is eclipsed by the 2007. The 2006 Georges de Latour exhibits a dense inky/purple color along with a sweet bouquet of graphite, licorice, charcoal, creme de cassis, and sweet cherries. Deep, ripe, and full-bodied with powerful tannins, admirable structure, and superb depth, it will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age, and should be drinkable over the following 25+ years.

($115; includes 7% petit verdot) Good deep red-ruby. Classic cabernet aromas of cassis, violet and licorice. Silky and suave on entry, then supple and sweet in the middle, with a fruit character that's very ripe without showing any dried fruit notes. The dark berry and bitter chocolate flavors support the substantial tannins. This weighs in at 15.1% alcohol but does not come off as hot. Finishes with very good persistence.

This showed the classic Georges de Latour profile, showing black cherries, "scorched earth" (to use a Robert Parker-ism) and a little bit of brett, however the finish was relatively short for this wine. My guess is, in three or four years, this should become more complex and "settled", but the finish will always remain relatively short. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed this "class in a glass."

About This Producer

In 1900, when Georges de Latour's wife, Fernande, first laid eyes on the land that would become their original Rutherford vineyard, she named it "beau lieu," or "beautiful place." Shortly thereafter, de Latour sold his thriving cream of tartar business, bought the four-acre ranch and founded Beaulieu Vineyard with the vision of making Napa Valley wines that would rival those of his native France. Today the winery continues to turn to innovative practices to craft wines in a bold, classic style. They have become a leader in clonal research, and the BV Clone Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon wines are highly acclaimed. Most recently a new state-of-the-art winery was completed within one of the original buildings. The Georges de Latour Private Reserve Winery utilizes the latest technology in combination with time-honored traditions for the production of this exceptional, wine-the longtime benchmark of Rutherford Cabernet.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
