($45) Medium red. Explosively perfumed, offering a sexy array of dark berry, spice and floral scents, along with smoky minerality. Round and juicy, with deep black raspberry and blueberry flavors complemented by cinnamon and anise. Really stains the palate, finishing with gentle grip and a whiplash of dark berries.

The 2006 Pinot Noir La Neblina has more earth and forest floor notes, some ruggedly constructed Pommard-like red fruits backed up by serious muscle, depth, and power. If the 2007 is pure charm and elegance with concentration, the 2006 is its more burly sibling.

Supple and harmonious, with smooth-textured cola, wild berry, spice and floral scents that are fresh and vibrant, ending with a nice minerality.

Muted nose of bright red fruits, cherry. Gets a lot better with a bit of time. Solid structure but still thin and tart on palate. Medium to long finish.

One of four different samples of Pinot given to me. Not a fav. Good wine, did not feel it was distinctive. A little light on the pallet. Perhaps just use to bigger wines.

About This Producer

Radio Coteau works exclusively with small, cool-climate vineyard sites in western Sonoma County. Winegrower Eric Sussman's first vintage at the helm was 2001, after spending the years prior gaining experience with organic winegrowing in Washington and French winemaking in Bordeaux and Burgundy. Learning from the masters at the Chateaux Baron Philippe de Rothschild in 1995 and Domaines Comte Armand and Jacques Prieur in 1996, Eric returned stateside with a strong commitment to producing wines with a true "sense of place." The winery crafts Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Zinfandel, primarily from designated sites.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
