Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Spectator | Rating: 93

A glycerol-like texture joins licorice and menthol notes to lend this red an air of maturity, with a core of cherry and raspberry fruit. This is beautifully balanced, though the tannins will be even smoother in a few years. Fine, mineral aftertaste.

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Pian delle Vigne is one of the more open, accessible wines of the vintage. Dried red cherries, flowers, tobacco, spices and herbs are some of the notes that emerge from this attractive, fleshy Brunello. In 2006 the Pian delle Vigne is especially elegant, silky and refined, with gorgeous textural elegance and lovely overall balance. The Pian delle Vigne was fermented in stainless steel and spent 24 months in oak prior to being bottled.

Deep Purple with a brown tinge. Red Cherry and slight oak on finish. Tasty wine and balanced well. Not too many more years left to age...

About This Producer

Although the Antinori family has been making wine for over 600 years and is steeped in tradition, they haven't been afraid to modernize production and to take an innovative approach to blending. One result is the world famous Super Tuscan "Tignanello," a blend of Sangiovese (85%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%), and Cabernet Franc (5%). Marchesi Piero Antinori is the current proprietor of the estate, and was instrumental in creating Tignanello, propelling the popularity of Super Tuscans worldwide.

Antinori produces wines from the Italian regions of Tuscany and Umbria. In addition to Tignanello, some of Antinori's most well-known wines include Solaia, Guado al Tasso, Campo di Sasso, Badia a Passignano, Pian delle Vigne, and Chianti Classico. Antinori's various estates include 1,400 hectares of vineyards planted in Bolgheri, Montalcino, Orvieto, Montepulciano, and Chianti Classico, as well as the emerging locales Sovana and southern Maremma.

Italyâ??s most popular grape, Sangiovese is the top grape used in Tuscany including Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and many of Italyâ??s â??Super Tuscans.â?? At least 14 clones of Sangiovese exist which are grouped into the Sangiovese grosso and Sangiovese piccolo families. Sangiovese thrives in a warm climate and consists of over 10% of Italyâ??s vineyard acreage (covering almost a quarter million acres).
