Professional Reviews For This Wine

Vinfolio | Rating: 95-96

Those who come looking for Pisoni Pinot Noir can never say they were not warned. The Pinots are always some of the most extracted and massively built in existence. Coming as it does from the original planting, Patz & Hall fruit benefits from over twenty years of viticultural history at this one-of-a-kind site. The track record here is impeccable. Consistently one of the most sought-after wines in the portfolio, the rarity of the large formats makes them an unequivocal opportunity to add to your collection of benchmark new world Pinot Noir.

The nose shows all of the beautiful aromatics - cherry, spicy strawberry and black raspberry that Pisoni is revered for. On the palate the flavors are smoothly defined with black cherry, clove and chocolate.

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 91(+?)

Good full deep red. Deep, musky aromas of raspberry, blueberry and smoked meat. Large-scaled and powerful but not especially sweet. There's huge fruit here but in a distinctly masculine style and in need of time in bottle. This will age on its sheer size and volume. The tannins are strong but fine-grained. Anne Moses describes this wine as more restrained at this early stage than the 2005 and notes that the fruit was picked late in what was a cool year for this site.

About This Producer

Since 1988, Patz & Hall has set a standard for Chardonnays and Pinots that epitomize poise and finesse. The winery is a partnership of four individuals - Donald Patz, James Hall, Anne Moss and Heather Patz - all of whom are veterans in the production of fine wine. Between them, they have made wine at Flora Springs, Honig Cellars, Far Niente, Marimar Torres, Spring Mountain and Cain Vineyard. They source from regions ranging from the Santa Lucia Highlands to Mendocino, and prime areas in between. The wines skillfully maintain the intricate and graceful dance between substance and balance, power and elegance - the key characteristics of world-class Pinot Noir.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
