More tannin and earthiness are apparent in the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Ark Vineyard. Last year, this wine revealed considerable softness, but that has morphed into a more delineated, beautifully dense, full-bodied Cabernet with dazzling fragrance and glycerin in addition to an extravagant fruit character.

($250; 15.5% alcohol) Good deep red-ruby. Knockout claret-like aroma of currant, tobacco, mocha, licorice and loam. Sweet and lush, with lovely energy and a distinctly rocky mineral character contributing to the wine's suave impression. Finishes firmly tannic, bright and spicy, with terrific persistence. Jayson Woodbridge started picking his home vineyard on October 12, ultimately making five passes through the vines.

Firm, ripe and structured, displaying a medley of rich currant, black cherry and wild berry fruit, with touches of mineral and sage and hints of anise and tobacco. Firms up on the finish, yet there's a complex push of Cabernet fruit and a pleasant mocha oak flavor that adds a nice dimension.

Fantastic bottle, showing very well now but will continue to age. Gripping taninic structure with complexities that continued to wow as the wine opened up. Layers of mineral, earth, leather, cassis, dark fruit, and mocha. Fantastic and need more

About This Producer

In 1998 Jayson Woodbridge released his first vintage, one Cabernet, made from his own 10-acre Kayli Morgan Vineyard. The goal was to create a "Right Bank" style Cabernet from those clay soils. With the second vintage, he earned scores in the mid-90s and sold the wine for double the previous vintage. In addition to the Cabernet Sauvignon Kayli Morgan Vineyard, Woodbridge produces a Howell Mountain Cabernet from The Ark Vineyard and a single-vineyard Shiraz from his Ancient Way Vineyard in Barossa Valley.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
