The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Deus ex Machina was flirting with perfection on this go around, and was open, layered and sexy. Possessing rock-star kirsch, blackberry liqueur, incense, spice, garrigue and ground pepper, it's a full-bodied, incredibly textured 2006 that has thrilling concentration, sweet tannin and a finish this just keeps going. If forced to pick one of these bottles for current drinking, it's showing spectacularly.

($150) Glass-staining ruby. Explosively perfumed bouquet of fresh red and dark berries, potpourri, incense and licorice. Completely saturates the palate with sweet raspberry and boysenberry flavors, picking up anise and lavender pastille qualities with air. For a wine with this kind of palate impact there's remarkable finesse and clarity. Red berry and floral notes echo endlessly on the long, sappy finish.

Nearly gushes with raspberry and fig sauce notes, but the ripe, lush fruit is harnessed by a superracy graphite underpinning, which allows notes of mineral, shiso leaf, braised fig and incense to stretch out the long, supersilky finish. Has impressive length and plenty of latent concentration.

Juicy, round and wonderfully well balanced fruit on top of a little tight tannin but still vivacious and very expressive and flirtatious. You could almost drink this now. Dry and savoury finish, refreshing mid palate. Well done! A very impressive set of wines from this producer. 60:40 Grenache:Mourvèdre.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
