Seemingly more reserved and rustic (probably because it followed the 2007), the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Le Clos du Caillou (60% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah) offers impressive richness and depth, with plenty of toasted spice, licorice, wild herbs and earthy, dark fruits. Relatively closed for a '06, it nevertheless has serious concentration, plenty of texture and no shortage of underlying structure. Give it another year or three and drink it through 2026.

Really packed but supersilky, with a gorgeous beam of raspberry ganache gliding over super fine-grained tannins, while notes of incense, blackberry preserve, bittersweet chocolate truffle and black tea fill in the background. Seamless and very long.

($180; 60% grenache and 20% each of mourvedre and syrah) Inky ruby. Alluring perfume of red and dark berries, cinnamon, incense and fresh flowers. Lush, creamy and sweet, offering palate-coating dark berry flavors and a sweet lavender pastille quality. Expands and gains depth and energy on the finish, leaving behind zesty cherry and berry skin and bitter chocolate notes. Extremely impressive and built to age.

Bright crimson. Very heady – the first wine that really sings of the garrigue. Spicy too – most mulled wine in its flavours! Definite cinnamon there… Lots of effort here. Lovely tannins – so ripe yet present, Very rich and flattering.

About This Producer

The exceptional quality and stylistic excellence of this property's wines are due to the dedication, versatility and forward thinking of both the late Jean-Denis Vacheron (who married the owner's daughter, Sylvie Pouzin) and the current winemaker, Bruno Gaspard. Jean-Denis and Sylvie had taken over from her father, Claude, in 1996. However, in 2002, Jean-Denis was killed in a traffic accident and Sylvie took the reins. Today, with the help of winemaker Gaspard and oenologist Philippe Cambie, she has catapulted the domaine into the elite of the southern Rhone. Despite holding only 9 hectares of land, the domaine boasts venerable neighbors (Chateau Rayas and Chateau Beaucastel), and its vineyards have elements of the best of both these estates. The rocky-sandy soils provide excellent drainage and impart minerality to these Chateauneuf-du-Papes.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
