($48) Deep ruby-red. Superripe aromas of raspberry, mocha, black olive and game. Large-scaled, saline and sappy, conveying a powerful impression of terroir with its notes of syrah-like game, mocha, truffle and pepper. Wonderfully tactile zinfandel, finishing extremely long, with tannins covered by peppery fruit. The Turley wine from this site has been consistently spectacular in recent years.

Wow! This is not the typical Turley fruit bomb one comes to expect. The nose is a pure raspberry liqueur. Tadte is quite elegant, not overwhelming or too extracted. Reminds me of Torbreck's Les Amis. Body is well balanced with more raspberry, light tannins, and some cherry. A wine for French Rhone lovers.

Wow. Very special line. Blueberry, blackberry and currant. Leather on the finish. This is not "old" as Parker suggests. Very much alive. A huge hit at the party.

Earthy ground smell. Not as strong as an old Burgundy, but along those lines. Long, smooth finish without a hint of bitterness. Balanced tannins. Very good bottle.

Very well balanced wine. Nice nose of raspberry, with hints of oak. The mouth is dominated by raspberry and some slight sense of cherry. Nice mild oaky spice and gentle tannins.

Gorgeous, dark violet in color with a beautiful, intriguing nose of spicy blackberry, plum, lilacs, and game, this is one high alcohol zinfandel (16.1%)that does not reveal itself as such. Tasting of fine quality blackberries and pomegranate, with black pepper and clove spice as well as a hint of fennel and expertly integrated vanilla, there is no hint of jamminess or sense of its alcoholic content. Impressive!

About This Producer

Making "big reds" has been Larry Turley's passion since giving up his co-ownership of Frog's Leap Winery in 1993. Turley Wine Cellars is run by Larry and his wife Suzanne. Larry's sister, winemaker Helen Turley, made the wines here until 1995. Now the honor goes to Ehren Jordan, who also makes wines for Neyers. With a focus on producing old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, Turley sources fruit from vineyards some of which date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Both the Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs have a dark, saturated, inky color, with intense fruit flavors that make unforgettable statements about the power and complexity these varieties may attain.

Wine Varietal: Zinfandel

Zinfandel is a black grape variety of Croatian descent. With no ties to France, Zinfandel has actually been linked to the Primitivo grape of Italy, but California is where the majority of Zinfandel is grown. This variety possesses extremely versatile characteristics from light and fruity, to jammy and ripe with high alcohol. Growing Zinfandel can be difficult due to its packed clusters and short stems, which make the vines prone to uneven ripening and mildew. Preferring a warm climate, Zinfandel is also grown in other western states in the United States as well as in Australia and South Africa. Typical descriptors for Zinfandel include red berry fruits, raspberry, blackberry, anise and pepper.
