($38) Inky ruby. Powerfully scented bouquet of ripe dark berries, plum, kirsch, cocoa powder and licorice; smoked meat and dried flowers appear with aeration, adding complexity. Pliant cassis and candied cherry flavors are framed by gentle tannins, picking up cracked pepper and bitter chocolate on the close. Deep, ripe and rich, but the peppery element adds energy and lift. I suspect that this will gain further in complexity with another year or so of bottle age.

Good gracious! This is HUGE! Be prepared for this syrah, it will knock your socks off. Decanted for 4 hours according to winemakers notes. High alcohol and jammy, a bit overpowering. Will wait a few years to open the next bottle.

Yes Yes Mr. Finley. Shane puts together a wonderful display of Syrah. The bottle I tasted, was stuck on a San Diego Fedex truck for 2 days during a heat wave. When I opened the box, the bottle was HOT to the touch. Chilled it down, waiting to taste a disaster. But WTF, this was superb and my 3 guests concurred. Want more, and I will be ordering The Unknown in future vintages. I usually don't put a ton of words to a note, but this one deserves the recognition.

About This Producer

Shane Finley's winemaking career has been a steady climb from bottom-rung harvest intern to, currently, Associate winemaker at Kosta Browne. Between these two posts Shane spent time at Copain, Torbreck, and, most influential to his winemaking philosophy, a year in the vineyards and cellars of Domaine Pierre Gaillard. Shane sources fruit from some of the top Syrah vineyards in California, and produces wines of "nuance, balance, and originality."
