A blend of 38% Syrah, 36% Grenache, and the rest Mourvedre, the deep ruby/purple-colored 2006 Heart Stone Vineyard exhibits beautiful pure fruit, lovely sweetness, not quite the size of the 2005, but lovely texture and purity. It is an elegant, more feminine example of this cuvee that should drink well young, and keep for a decade.

Intense and powerful, with ripe, focused plum, blackberry and wild berry fruit that's shaded by pepper and nutmeg flavors. Full-bodied, dense and chewy, with pleasantly earthy tannins. Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre.

A very good and fruity wine, but not up to the level of the other Saxum I tried before. Need about 3 hours of decanting. Nice aroma on the nose, but not as big as the other Saxums. A bit tighter tannins and a bit shorter finish. An untypical dark chocolate can be felt in addition to the usual big fruity body.

Terrific bottle. Much more than the typical syrah. Spice, blueberry, leather. Very lush. Tasted over 2 days and the wine continued to evolve.

About This Producer

Saxum Vineyards is focused on producing Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre-based blends from the Templeton Gap of Paso Robles, California. They let their rocky calcareous soils, steep hillsides, and cooling ocean breezes speak through their wines by keeping yields extremely low, picking fruit at the peak of ripeness, and using a minimalist approach in the cellar. Production is kept at a total of 2200-2800 cases per year divided between 6 different cuvees: Broken Stones, Heart Stone Vineyard, James Berry Vineyard, Booker Vineyards, Rocket Block and Bone Rock.
