Professional Reviews For This Wine

Vinfolio | Rating: 93

One of three sites Rudius uses from Alder Springs and is the only one using 100% new oak. A peppercorn and smooth bacon fat, blackberry puree nose. The palate has solid fruit of saturated blackberry and more solid stone fruits on finish.

($45; 15.5% alcohol) Bright ruby. High-toned, liqueur-like aromas of black raspberry, pepper, woodsmoke, smoked meat and crushed rock. Dense, ripe, lush and seamless; packed with flamboyant flavors of raspberry, woodsmoke, fruitcake and exotic spices. This creamy, sexy syrah is like a liquid confection. Finishes long and powerful; manages to hold its alcohol but I'd still want to enjoy this on the early side.

About This Producer

Rudius is the ancient Roman word for a wooden sword that was used by soldiers and gladiators during their training. Traditionally, a rudius was given to gladiators when they had won their freedom from the arena. Winemaker Jeff Ames views his own project as freedom to pursue his style of winemaking, after working on other labels over the past years. Ames focuses on Grenache and Syrah from Russian River. Production is under 200 cases each.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
