Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 88

($33-$45) Red-ruby. Cool aromas of currant, mocha, graphite, tobacco and herbs; I don't find this wine's typical Vosne-like black fruit and floral character today. Supple and moderately broad but could use a bit more definition and eclat A moderately ripe Rol Valentin, finishing with dusty tannins and a lightly peppery quality.

About This Producer

A favorite from St. Emilion, this wine offers that complex matrix of accessibility and age-worthiness inherent to this appellation. Since Eric Prissette a former football player - European style - bought the property in 1994, there has been an intense focus on producing "the most magnificent, flamboyant, and concentrated wines possible." To that end, the wine sees frequent punch-downs during fermentation, malolactic fermentation and aging in 100% new oak on the lees, and micro-oxygenation. The high caliber of these wines contrasts sharply their thoroughly reasonable prices. This is an 85-90% Merlot production, so expect a plush entry and roundness of palate.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
