Professional Reviews For This Wine

Vinfolio | Rating: 96

A world-class wine from a grand cru site. Shows a powerful nose with floral aromatics, abundantly jammed figs, cassis and copious amounts of round, long spiciness. The palate presence echoes the aromatics with geranium, black cassis, sprinkling of pepper and grilled meat. Stunning! The more I come back to this wine the more the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. This is quite simply sensuous, riveting Syrah. It is Hudson, after all. Decant.

($60) Full medium ruby. Incredible nose melds black raspberry, leather, game and brown spices, plus a suggestion of apricot. Wonderfully lush, silky and sweet, with superb density and depth to the flavors of raspberry, leather and brown spices. This lightly saline syrah saturates the entire palate. Finishes dry and extremely long, with chewy flavors of rocks, minerals and violet. Vinified with 90% whole clusters. A great California syrah.

About This Producer

Former Beringer Executive Tor Kenward launched his brand in the early 2000s and soon tapped Jeff Ames, the German-born, Memphis-raised protege of Thomas Brown to be his winemaker. Concentrating on red Rhone varieties (bottled under his Rock label) as well as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay (under TOR) from single vineyard sites, the wines have swiftly gained critically high acclaim. Production for any one wine rarely exceeds 200 cases.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
