Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

($50) Bright red color. Sexy, intensely perfumed aromas of raspberry, wild strawberry, fresh rose and minerals. Fleshy red fruit flavors stain the palate and offer excellent vivacity, picking up fine-grained tannins with air. A clean, brisk style of pinot, with no excess weight and great finishing thrust.

Wine Advocate | Rating: 92

Certainly his gorgeous 2006 Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard is one of the stars of that vintage. Boysenberry, blueberry, spring flowers, and crushed rock are followed by a wine with sweetness of tannin, medium to full body, layers of concentrated fruit, and no hard edges. The acid gives uplift and more aromatic penetration, and the tannins provide a certain framework but are sweet, and the overall impression is Pinot Noir of tremendous purity.

About This Producer

Radio Coteau works exclusively with small, cool-climate vineyard sites in western Sonoma County. Winegrower Eric Sussman's first vintage at the helm was 2001, after spending the years prior gaining experience with organic winegrowing in Washington and French winemaking in Bordeaux and Burgundy. Learning from the masters at the Chateaux Baron Philippe de Rothschild in 1995 and Domaines Comte Armand and Jacques Prieur in 1996, Eric returned stateside with a strong commitment to producing wines with a true "sense of place." The winery crafts Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Zinfandel, primarily from designated sites.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
