This estate was acquired last year by St.-Emilion's Cuvelier family, who has done a phenomenal job of bringing the famous Premieres Grand Cru Classe of St.-Emilion, Clos Fourtet, into superstar status. Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt are now producing the wine, although I do not believe they had anything to do with the 2006. Its deep ruby/purple color, notes of sweet black currants, incense, camphor, and spice box, and medium to full-bodied style are accompanied by a wine with excellent fruit intensity, purity, and length. It should drink well for 10-15 years. Good value.

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 87-89

(57% cabernet sauvignon, 36% merlot and 7% petit verdot) Medium ruby. Black cherry and a floral perfume on the ripe nose. Round and rich, but with a firm edge of acidity giving the wine shape. Offers a restrained sweetness. Solidly structured but not hard. Finishes with palate-dusting tannins. Another very good performance by this consistent property.

Still young but ready to drink in my view. Medium to strong bodied, good tannins, long taste with cherry notes, sweet final. Very good value for money.

About This Producer


Located in Moulis, a Medoc commune without any classed growth estates, Chateau Poujeaux is one of the top properties in this tiny region. Designated as a Cru Bourgeois estate, Chateau Poujeaux maintains 52 ha. of vineyards which sit on a solid gravel foundation. The vineyards are comprised of approximately 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot, with an average vine age of 35 years. All fruit is harvested by hand, and the wines are aged in 50% new and 50% neutral oak barrels for up to one year.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend


Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
