($60) Inky ruby. Complex bouquet of red and dark berries complemented by minerals, mint, anise and black pepper. Rich but focused on the palate, offering sweet raspberry and blackcurrant flavors, a silky texture and strong mineral snap. More elegant and precise than the Termes, showing tighter focus, clarity and finishing sweetness. For a rich wine, this is quite graceful.

Wine presented itself as dark ruby with long legs. Lots of fruit on the top end of this wine. Bing cherry, boysenberry, slight oak notes with a hint of licorice and spice. Tannins were mild and the finish ended slightly peppery. Took a chance and paired this with Saffron Risotto with Shrimp, Scallops and roasted red peppers. Pairing ended up to be perfect.

Cork disintegrated which made the drinking experience less than optimal but with more air this could have been more special (and perhaps some better filtration). Nearly pitch black, lots of minerals, spice box, loam, mocha and some blueberry pie. Nose was growing and tannins for this are in a good place, was definitely in its drinking window. Didn't have the complexity or "wow" factor that usually characterizes the Numanthia wines, but nothing short of a good effort. Drink soon. Very well structured, and probably peaking.

Wine Varietal: Tempranillo

Tempranillo is Spain's noble grape. Grown mostly in northern Spain, some of the best Tempranillo wine comes from the regions of Rioja and the Ribera del Duero. This grape enjoys cooler climates and is sensitive to pests and adverse weather conditions. While Tempranillo can be bottled alone, it is often blended with other Spanish grapes such as Grenache, Carignan, and more recently, Cabernet Sauvignon. Tempranillo is also grown in the Duero region of Portugal where the grapes are commonly blended to make Port. Tempranillo wines may be consumed young, but are regarded as being at their best when aged. There are a multitude of synonyms for Tempranillo depending on where it is grown. Typical descriptors for Tempranillo include berries, plum, tobacco, vanilla, leather, meat and herbs.
