Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 90-92

Good deep red. Distinctly cool, smoky aromas of redcurrant, licorice and menthol. Sweet but tightly wrapped, with cool flavors of black fruits and minerals. This fruit was picked with 13.3% potential alcohol, but has a lower pH than Magnien's negociant version, which comes from vines next to Clos Saint-Jacques. Firm tannins and acids give this a solid structure for aging.

Trust Rating: 97
Tasted On: 11/15/2010
Drink Dates: 2014-2014
Tasting note: This is exceptionally fresh and bright, particularly for a classic Cazetiers with an intense and densely fruited earth-infused nose that complements the robust but pure and equally intense full-bodied flavors brimming with both extract and a fine minerality plus plenty of the typical Gevrey muscle on the wonderfully long finish supported by buried but still very firm tannins. This is a complex effort and very Cazetiers in character. Tasted: Jan 01, 2008 Score: 90-93 Drink: 2014+ - Comments: Sweet spot Outstanding

About This Producer

Michael Magnien wines offer the Burgundy enthusiast a great opportunity to experience the refined extraction and elegant concentration of Pinot Noir. Michel comes from a long line of Burgundy artisans and owns 27 acres of grand cru, premier cru and village vineyards. He sold off the majority of his crop until 1992, when he started bottling most of the harvest. In 1994, at the urging of his son Frederic, he decided to bottle the whole harvest and thus it remains to this day. He is a leader in terroir-driven Pinot and deals in purity. His wines are sleek yet commanding, and flood the senses with waves of berry and cherry in a sea of perfumed and exotic spices.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
