The 2006 Pinot Noir Terraces is deep ruby/purple in color, displays lots of red and blue fruits, is full-bodied, doesn't have the nuances of the 115 or the High Density, but is not far behind in character, power, richness, and appeal. It should drink nicely for 5-7 years as well.

Site Blog: Wine And I The wine is brick red in color with soft violet hues, medium in body and extract. A profound mix of aromas are present on the nose- bing cherry, raspberry, Dr. Pepper, cloves, cinnamon, truffles, mushrooms. The flavors are ripe and powerful but very elegant- black cherry, vanilla, red currants, mushrooms, forest floor, allspice, and raspberry all come to mind. The alcohol comes in at 14.9%, but the wine doesn't suffer for it. It has a tart and vibrant acidity and tannins that are silky. The wine drinks with a luxurious feel in the mouth. The finish is long with plenty more red fruit and spice.

About This Producer


In 1996 Melville Vineyards made the bold move from Knights Valley to the Santa Rita Hills appellation, where Ron Melville and his sons set up the estate property with a focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Santa Rita microclimate, with its coastal winds and fog, provided the Melvilles the perfect locale for their 139 planted acres of Pinot, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Viognier. Winemaker Greg Brewer, of Brewer-Clifton fame, oversees production at Melville.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir


Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
